It Is Not a “World Premiere”

The A400M Atlas is a standard military transport aircraft currently in service with the French Air Force. Its firefighting capabilities are not the result of a new structural redesign, but rather a removable roll-on/roll-off module installed in the cargo hold. While the system is undeniably practical, calling it a recent innovation is a stretch.

Aerospace manufacturer Airbus conducted the first flight tests of this prototype back in 2022. The current deployment is more of a delayed demonstration than a true world premiere.

  • A400M Atlas: Due to its massive size, the aircraft can only land at three bases in France (Orléans, Mont-de-Marsan, or Istres). Factoring in travel and turnaround time for reloading, it is capable of delivering only 20 tons of water every 1 to 1.5 hours.
