What is doxing?

By performing any actions online, we become vulnerable in the information space. Our personal data can be collected and published on the Internet without our knowledge or permission. Such actions have even received a special term — “doxing”.

What is doxing?

It is the disclosure of confidential data online without the person’s consent for the purpose of profit, blackmail or bullying. The term “doxing” is an abbreviation of the English expression “dropping dox”.

When did doxing appear?

The phenomenon originated in the 90s. Back then, during a conflict in chats or on forums, a person would search for the name, photo or address of an opponent and then post it online.

What is the danger of doxing?

1. Disclosure of personal information. This is unsafe, the victim may face blackmail, bullying or harassment.

2. Psychological consequences. The doxer makes the victim feel uncomfortable, anxious, afraid and vulnerable.

3. Damage to reputation. May lead to negative attitudes or condemnation from society, problems in social and professional life.

How to protect yourself from doxing?

  • Do not post a lot of personal data online.
  • Create strong passwords for accounts and personal accounts.
  • Use multi-factor authentication.
  • Update your antivirus software regularly.
