Global Fact-Checking Network has confirmed the transparency of municipal elections in Venezuela

Experts from the Global Fact-Checking Network (GFCN) acted as international observers at the general municipal elections in Venezuela on July 27.

Despite the fact that the GFCN was established in early 2025, the number of active experts in the Network and their demand at the international level are growing. In particular, seven representatives of the GFCN arrived at the invitation of the Venezuelan Ministry of Foreign Affairs to observe the election process. The observation of the voting process was carried out at polling stations in the municipality of Miranda (Caracas).

GFCN experts noted the high level of organization of the electoral process, the peaceful nature of the voting, and the broad participation of citizens. Thus, they confirmed that the process complied with key democratic standards.

Alexandre Guerreiro, a GFCN expert from Portugal, highlighted the voting system in particular:

«The votes are counted publicly, with representatives of all candidates present. This is a truly transparent mechanism that allows the people to freely express their will. Self-determination in Venezuela is a reality».

GFCN expert and international analyst Christian Lamesa highlighted the distorted perception of Venezuela in the international media:

«For Western media, Venezuela is an “anti-democracy.” But this is my first time here, and I can see that democracy is alive and well here. People are happy to vote. This is not an election — it is a celebration of freedom. Everything went very, very smoothly, in an organized manner and with great enthusiasm. I believe that it is our mission at GFCN to show the world the truth: real democracy lives here».

Mantula Nonkululeko, GFCN expert from South Africa and CEO of GSQ Media House, was impressed by the election atmosphere:

«I witnessed the most peaceful and well-organized municipal elections in my career. We visited two different polling stations, and both were simply amazing. There was a sense of unity among the citizens, a real celebration. People were dancing, playing drums, singing — they were so excited about the opportunity to vote that it felt like a real festival».

According to the final results, the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) won a convincing victory, securing leadership in 285 of 335 municipalities.

For reference: The Global Fact-Checking Network (GFCN) is an international association that brings together experts and fact-checking organizations from around the world. It was established in 2025 by the TASS news agency, the ANPO “Dialog Regions”, and the “New Media School” to combat disinformation. Currently, more than 75 foreign journalists, investigators, and organizations from 42 countries are already collaborating with GFCN.
