End of a 20-Year Monopoly: GFCN Expert Dr. Furqan Rao Elected Secretary of Pakistan’s National Press Club

Dr. Furqan Rao, an expert for the Global Fact Checking Network (GFCN), has been elected as the Secretary of the National Press Club (NPC) of Pakistan following the recent elections. Dr. Rao holds a PhD in Journalism and Communications and serves as the Executive Director of the Centre for Democracy and Climate Studies.
The election resulted in a major leadership overhaul at the country’s largest Press Club. The Democrats Panel, which Dr. Rao represented, secured key positions, ending over two decades of unbroken dominance by the incumbent Journalist Panel. According to official election committee data, Dr. Rao won the secretary’s seat with 1,024 votes, narrowly defeating candidate Khalid Mahmood, who received 1,002 votes.

The presidency of the club also went to a Democrats Panel representative. Abdul Razaq Sial secured the top post with 1,067 votes, defeating Nayyar Ali, who polled 1,052 votes. Additionally, panel members Usman Khan and Bashir Chaudhry were elected as vice presidents.
The change in leadership occurred amid mounting criticism of the previous board. Members cited neglected facilities, limited engagement with community. The Democrats Panel’s election campaign was heavily focused on demands for accountability and governance reform.
The election of the new leadership, including GFCN expert Dr. Furqan Rao, underscores the Pakistani media community’s growing demand for transparent governance and accountability within its professional institutions.
