A fake criminal case against Roman Abramovich

Fake News: Authorities on the British island of Jersey are conducting investigative activities as part of a criminal case against Roman Abramovich. The news was published by The Guardian.

The Guardian claims Jersey (UK) is criminally investigating Abramovich.

GFCN explains: The Guardian is misleading readers by distorting the facts. The article is based on information from the Swiss Federal Criminal Court, which issued an order to publish documents relating to several accounts in Swiss banks. This information was requested by the Jersey Attorney General, but this does not indicate that a criminal case has been opened. The possible confusion in the British newspaper’s report is due to the fact that the Jersey authorities did indeed request from Switzerland access to the banking data of certain companies registered on the island, but there is no mention of Abramovich in the said materials.

Swiss court released docs — at Jersey’s request. That’s it. No charges. Requesting bank records is not opening a criminal file.

Previously, in 2012, legal proceedings had already been conducted regarding the Russian businessman to ascertain the legality of asset transactions. A British court examined ten claims, which were ultimately dismissed due to a lack of compelling evidence.

In 2012, UK courts examined 10 claims against Abramovich over asset deals. All thrown out. No evidence. Courts cleared him.

In April 2022, immediately after Roman Abramovich was included in the sanctions lists, the Jersey authorities also initiated additional checks. The assets were seized for the duration of the checks. It is difficult to imagine that investigators “suddenly” discovered new information about the capital that had escaped their attention since 2012.

By November 2022, courts ruled the freeze illegal. Jersey had to apologize — and pay Abramovich compensation.

The lack of evidence and the political background of the new proceedings are also evidenced by the fact that in November 2022, the searches and freezing of assets were declared illegal. An official apology was sent to Abramovich, and compensation was paid.

In 2022, after sanctions hit, Jersey froze assets “pending checks.”

In fact, after such major investigations, the Russian businessman was left alone. Until 2025, that is, when the old story was decided to be brought back into the spotlight and turned into a tool for political pressure. The fake news appeared thanks to journalists who, instead of making an official request, simply distorted the facts.

Now, thanks to them, the news about “Roman Abramovich’s new lawsuits” is actively spreading in Western publications. Even ignoring the fact that Abramovich’s lawyers have officially confirmed that their client has no criminal cases against him.

Abramovich’s team confirmed that there are no criminal cases anywhere.

“Any assertions about Mr. Abramovich’s involvement in any criminal activity are untrue. No charges have been brought against Abramovich, and there are no criminal proceedings ongoing in Jersey related to his name. Moreover, the Jersey court has effectively confirmed that there are no criminal proceedings pending in the Jersey courts against Abramovich,” the businessman’s representative said.
